В смешанной эстафете принимают участие четыре спортсмена (две женщины и двое мужчин), которые являются представителями одного Национального Олимпийского комитета. Первые два этапа по 6 км бегут женщины, следующие два по 7,5 км — мужчины. Каждый спортсмен дважды выполняет стрельбу (первая стрельба — лежа, вторая — стоя). За каждую незакрытую мишень спортсмен получает штрафной круг в 150 м. Спортсмены стартуют с трех рядов одновременно, по 10 человек в ряду. Стартовый порядок определяется по зачету Кубка Наций.

biathlon mixed relay
Event in biathlon. In 2011, the IOC confirmed the inclusion of the biathlon mixed relay event in the program of the Olympic Winter Games of 2014 in Sochi. The mixed relay features two female athletes and two male athletes from the same NOC competing together. Women race a 6 km leg and men race a 7.5 km leg in the following order: W-W-M-M. Each athlete shoots twice (1 prone, 1 standing). For every missed target a penalty loop of 150 m must be skied. The start is performed simultaneously in three rows, with the start order based on the results of the Nations Cup Score.
